Grosset Springvale Riesling 2016

Springvale_2016Springvale is a six hectare vineyard (ACO certified organic)and part of a much larger property at Watervale in the Clare Valley. Planted to exactly mirror the limestone below, the aim was to produce a ‘typical’ Watervale riesling. However, as the vines matured and the roots hit Mintaro slate buried deep below the limestone, recent vintages have expressed a unique site-specific, more mineral profile.

Blind tastings in recent years have indicated that, in quality terms, Springvale is closer to Polish Hill than was once the case and that conventional wisdom might suggest.

The outstanding 2016 vintage has clarified the changing character of the Springvale. Grosset Springvale 2016 has attractive lemon blossom aromatics with a hint of chalkiness; is intensely dry and mouthpuckering in its youth; shows generous lime, lemongrass flavours again with minerally notes; and finishes dry, vibrant and long. It is poised and given neat balance by its tight structure and shaley minerally acidity.

Reviews:

Halliday Wine Companion 2018
As good as any Grosset Springvale Riesling of the past decade, with beautifully balanced and very expressive lime juice fruit and crystalline acidity flowing through the gloriously long palate. Drink now or soonish if you value freshness, in 5-10 years if you value complexity. 96 Points.

Huon Hooke, The Real Review ‘Cellar Talk’, 27 January 2017
“RAVISHING RIZZA”
The colour is light, bright straw-yellow and the bouquet presents a subtle array of dried flowers and dried herbs. The palate is intense and focused, clean and alive, with lime leaf and lemon verbena nuances. It’s fine and dry, with a very long aftertaste. 97 Points.
