Grosset Apiana 2016

Apiana_2015Clare Valley – Only 400 dozen produced

The name derives from the notion of the ancient Romans that fiano, an indigenous variety from Campania in Italy’s south, resembled the aroma of honey. It was planted at the Grosset Rockwood Vineyard (ACO certified organic) ten years ago, during which time the vines struggled to produce a crop in these meager rocky soils.

This is the third vintage of Grosset Apiana, which is only available in limited quantities. Like the previous vintages of the wine, this has bright lemony citrus aromas, intense grassy, lemon flavours and a vibrant, dry, savoury finish of considerable length. It has excellent weight in the mid-palate and is, in essence, a delightful textural white.

Reviews

Mike Bennie, Winefront, 5 December 2016
Complex, engaging, great drinking. That’s the tenets. It’s a wine confident in its savouriness and firmness of texture. Scents of blanched almond, green tea, stone fruits, citrus. The palate has ropes of chalkiness that bind the juicy, green apple-meets-almond-meets-preserved lemon flavours. Fine, especially long and very delicious, with that twist of something intellectual coming from the glass that drags you back in. Lovers of complex white wine should find great appeal. 93+ Points. (cellar door only)

James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion, September 2016
A 60/40% blend of semillon and fiano, the latter a very ancient and highly regarded grape from Campania in southern Italy. The components are whole bunch-pressed and separately fermented in tank. The wine has wildflower nuances to the striking bouquet, and an incredible tactile grip on the mid-palate. 95 Points.
