Grosset Apiana 2015

Apiana_2015Clare Valley – Only 400 dozen produced

Fiano is a variety originating from the south of Italy, and in ancient Rome it was said to make wine that resembled honey.

It was planted by Grosset at Watervale nine years ago, during which time the vines struggled to produce a crop in these meager rocky soils.

The fiano vines are extremely low yielding, so the complexity and intensity of the fruit combines wonderfully with the clean, fresh citrus characters of the Watervale semillon grown on the same site.

Fiano sits neatly with Grosset’s philosophy of biodiversity and complexity in the vineyard, and acknowledges the influence of bees, one of the more miraculous species on earth.

Restrained dried herb and beeswax aromas; impressive weight and power in a dry, savoury mid-palate. Mouth-puckering intensity, generous flavour and lively zesty acidity.

James Halliday ‘Australian Wine Companion’ June 2016

…Two keys: intensity and length. The way this wine carries on through the finish is like opening a door through to tomorrow. It’s a textural wine, ripped with grapefruit, citrus and beeswax, but its the thrust that really captures the attention. 95 Points.

Tyson Stelzer ‘WBM Trade’ March/April 2016

An excellent harmony of the pear and golden delicious apple complexity of Fiano and the tense grapefruit and lime of Semillon, harmonising seamlessly to produce a blend that captures texture and mouthfeel with tension, vivacity and structure. With impeccable Grosset precision, the second release is a great vintage for this clever blend. 93 Points.
