Grosset G110 Riesling

Erin Larkin – Halliday

A single-clone bottling from the Rockwood vineyard. The last 2 vintages of G110 have been exceptional, scintillating wines. Those seasons have been warm ones, not traditionally suited to riesling. Enter now 2021, the year ‘made for it’: a long, cool, even growing season, responsible for extremely high-quality wines across the board, likened perhaps to the great 2002 vintage. And so … to this wine. Streamlined, long, lingering rivulets of spicy, almost austere riesling. It has integrity, shape and line, punctuated by detailed nuance and poise. It is spicy – even tense in its disposition – layered with nutmeg, spring flowers, brine, green apple skins, crushed limestone, mineral slate, snow pea tendril and even lemongrass. It is a kaleidoscope of flavour and texture, the puzzle pieces so small that it’s hard to put them all together – describing it is a challenge (which is a good sign for the wine). It is enigmatic, statuesque and epic in every way. But it’s also quiet, so do not underestimate it – make sure you tune in to its frequency.
