This is a cabernet sauvignon (with a small amount of cabernet franc) offering dark berry aromas, vibrant bramble characters and a classic blackcurrant palate. From a tiny crop – barely half a kilogram per vine – this is a wine of intensity, power, and promise. Yet, as a young cabernet, its generously flavoured almost silky palate invites one to sip more. While its youthfulness is most evident with a late firmness, all is beautifully balanced; such is the trademark of this wine.

Huon Hooke – Real Review

Very deep, very bright purple-red colour with a bell-clear and ultra-youthful mulberry/blueberry aroma showcasing the fruit, the oak input barely noticeable as the fruit is so powerful and brilliant. An absolutely gorgeous wine, the clarity and power of its fruit flavour is gobsmacking. Concentration is at a very high level but so are balance and harmony. A blinder of a wine. (95% cabernet sauvignon, 5% cabernet franc. 45% new oak. 250 dozen made) 09 JUN 2023 2025–2046

There is an especially graceful refinement and perfumed air to this Gaia, capturing the energy and mettle of this high and exposed site and amplifying its tension and zing in this cool season. Jeffrey Grosset has gauged ripeness impeccably, capturing black and redcurrants, rose petals and violets, with but subtle hints of sage and menthol. Fine-boned tannins of graceful texture yet confident endurance carry a finish of intensity, integrity and grand longevity.

Jeffrey Grosset is best known for his stellar range of precise rieslings, made in a diverse range of styles. His Clare Valley rieslings are an Australian benchmark. What is less well known is that Grosset also makes a selection of other wines – all organic and biodynamic – that are equally excellent, but often produced in tiny quantities. This beguiling blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc is a case in point, with just 250 cases made. It is quite dark and inky with classic dark currant flavours to the fore but it also has a certain style to it – of particular note is the intense but silky palate. One you can drink now, or cellar with confidence. Indisputably delicious. $106.
