Grosset Polish Hill Riesling 2011
With 30 consecutive vintages behind it, the ‘Polish Hill’ enjoys a privileged position as Australia’s finest riesling: the 2011 and the previous three harvests will do much to enhance that reputation. The remarkable consistency of style continues in spite of the tricky conditions that the 2011 vintage visited on the vineyard. Some will love its youthful tautness, extreme coiled steeliness and pristine varietal character while others may well prefer to wait for it to shrug off its customary restraint, tightness of structure and zingy minerally acidity. Whatever your preference, it’s all there. There’s a restrained savouriness, a hint of lime blossom, intense and ultra-concentrated schisty, sea shell minerally flavours that are pure, long and deep, tight steely structure, and a long taut finish that lingers dry and satisfying.

One of the most pristine riesling bouquets I have ever encountered. The most delicate lemon and lime blossoms, white lilies and green apples don’t do it justice. Pure, focused palate of mineral definition; textural presence on the back provides body; lime finish of epic persistence. Exact Polish Hill. Drink 2011-2012 or 2018-2026. 96 points

The flagship Grosset riesling is a more restrained and savoury affair than the Springvale, showing plenty of lime juice and sweet perfume, and smells of wet grey rock, lime blossom and fresh-cut green apple. The palate’s smooth, dry and contained, with a sleeve of ripe white-peach flavour that runs in linear shape with composed, sleek restraint. Snaps tight and mouth-wateringly dry through to the finish – really superb. One to age with confidence. 97 points
