Adelaide Hills – 3,800 bottles produced
Sourced as it has always been from one of the oldest and coldest vineyards in the Piccadilly Valley, the 2016 Grosset Pinot shows the concentration of flavour that is partly a product of that maturity. There is also a consistency from one vintage to the next with the Grosset Pinot that would appear to be influenced by the care it gets in the vineyard and the meticulous attention to detail in the winery.
The 2016 Grosset Pinot Noir has more exuberant aromatics than usual with bright mulberry and redcurrant complemented by floral notes. It is fresh and vibrant, wonderfully approachable with pure red cherry fruit flavours made more complex by a touch of briar. It is silky smooth and flows seamlessly through to a long finish which has a gentle grip that serves to remind us that there is cellaring potential here. It is intense, fine and lively – an excellent example of youthful Australia pinot.

Soil: Predominantly mottled yellow clays that are course grained; quartz rich soil over sandstone

Yield: Very low yielding – 1 bottle per vine
Canopy: Low (D5V12) to very low (D4V2) vigour. Vertically trained
Fruit: Small to medium sized berries and bunches. Dark red colour
Harvest date: Hand harvested 3rd- 8th March 2016
Fermentation: Two ferments, one whole bunch fermented and foot plunged, 10 months in French oak (60% new). 9 months in bottle
Fruit Flavours: Mulberry, black cherry, redcurrant
Profile: Lively, complex; fine, gentle lingering tannins

This is all about the opening of the peacock’s tail on the finish and aftertaste. The star-bright crimson colour semaphores that there’s a lot to come, yet the bouquet is holding its cards close to its chest. The palate lets it all hang out as a swathe of small red fruits and savoury whole-bunch components contest bragging rights, ultimately having to sign a truce after the glorious finish and aftertaste. 97 Points.
