Fresh cherries and roasting cashew lurk here, in a simple but clean and vibrant bouquet. The wine, assisted by that closure, seems audaciously bright and sassy. It has lovely balance, and its fresh raspberry acidity holds right through that long, tapering finish. When it’s gone, that juicy fruit comes back to haunt the palate, and you reach for more.

I rated the ’02 as the best pinot noir yet made by the legendary Jeffrey Grosset, but this is just as smart. Grosset attributes this new high standard for his pinots to the maturity of the vines – simple as that … This resonates with earthy, forest-floor aromas while the velvety palate displays a satisfying balance between the fruit, oak and acid. A very classy pinot.

Brilliant, tightly structured, spicy, perfumed pinot that slowly yields its succulent, undergrowthy complexity as you work your way down the bottle. Another great example of pinot noir as grown in the Adelaide Hills, and a wine that will improve in the cellar for five years or more.
