Grosset Pinot Noir 2002
The 2002 Grosset Pinot Noir from the Adelaide Hills catches your attention immediately with its delightful, fragrant aromatics: youthful squishy blackberries, dark cherries and some vibrant stalkiness. It’s remarkably approachable but needs time for its zesty acidity to soften and for the wine to develop some of the complexity that it promises. The flavours are rich, ripe, lively and distinctly varietal – blackberry, raspberry and black cherry with some stalky, earth, truffley, savoury characters. It already has a silky texture: expect that to soften and become more velvety with age.

This is the best pinot I can recall tasting from master winemaker Jeffrey Grosset. The palate is classic pinot: raspberry, plum and stewed cherries with a restrained underpinning of fine tannins. The texture is silky smooth. Grosset says it will be even better in six months.

This is a quite amazing pinot, and not at all in the ‘fruit-bomb’ fashion that has become the new world style. This is massively perfumed – both on the nose and right through the wine – with stalk, ash, sour cherry, beet, wet tobacco and loam rinsing and swirling and drawing from the attack to the drawn-out finish. It’s structured, it’s complex, it pulls through the mouth with a terrific sense of dare, and it entirely fans out on the finish. This is a brilliant wine probably the best pinot I’ve tasted from the Adelaide Hills region. 95 points
