Purchased in 2000 and planted the following year, Grosset Springvale is our 5.3 hectare high-altitude sanctuary at Watervale. This truly unique site caught Jeffrey’s eye for its remarkable geology—while the thin red loam over limestone topsoil appears typical for the region, the vines’ roots plunge deep into ancient slate bedrock, a geological anomaly that sets this vineyard apart.

A north-south fault line on the eastern border tells the story of this formation’s hundred-million-year history and naturally limits the vineyard’s footprint. We’ve oriented the rows to capture optimal sunshine, creating the perfect stage for our two carefully chosen riesling clones—one widely planted German variety, one rare German treasure.

Our 2,500 close-planted vines per hectare are entirely hand-tended in this A-Grade Certified Organic and Biodynamic vineyard. We never work the soil, allowing the living ecosystem to flourish. The result? Sturdy, resilient vines producing compact yellow-green bunches with moderate-sized berries that deliver exceptional concentration.

Each vine yields just two-and-a-half bottles of wine—our Springvale Riesling comes entirely from this special place. The remaining property has been returned to native vegetation, creating the species diversity that naturally manages pests and diseases.

This is farming in harmony with place—ancient geology, careful cultivation, and patient respect for what the land wants to give us.
