Grosset Gaia 1999

Tasting Notes

The 1999 Grosset Gaia has perfumed ripe, dark plum and black cherry aromas with some cedary oak notes, is supple and smoothly textured, has a characteristic tight structure, and some cassis, black plum and dark chocolate flavours with spicy, briary overtones. These attractive primary fruit characters are made more complex by the savoury edge that the Gaia vineyard seems to impart. The overall impression is of power, richness and concentration with restraint. The 1999 Grosset Gaia is already tasting fuller and more generous than when first released....expect it to further improve over the next five years but consider cellaring for ten and reap the optimum reward.

Jeff Collerson
The Daily Telegraph (June 2001)
Jeffrey Grosset is Australia's foremost riesling exponent but since 1990 has been producing this blend, which has become one of Australia's cult reds. As usual, cabernet sauvignon is the dominant variety, but this vintage has a good whack of cabernet franc and a dash of merlot. There is great purity of fruit with a superb structure that points to it holding together for a decade.
