The uncrowned king of Australian riesling, Jeffrey Grosset, decided to label his wine Off-dry, partly to signal that this was the first new wine he had released in 17 years. It has 16g/l residual sugar… and has the inimitable elegance of all Grosset Wines; its vibrant lime and apple flavours mask part, but by no means all, of its acidity. Balance and length are the keywords

Grosset Off-dry Riesling is a delicate and poised wine. Otton described it as ‘beautifully aromatic, with jasmine, snowdrop and white flowers; yet concentrated, intense and succulent. Lime zest and sherbet.’ The balance of sweetness and acidity are exemplary and the wine is truly off-dry. It would fit wherever you’d drink dry riesling and particularly with seafood.

Here’s proof that Grosset’s well-celebrated craftsmanship applies equally to an intricate balance between fine minerality and impeccably gauged sweetness. Pristine, pure and immaculate.

Largely as a response to high acidity, German winemakers learned to arrest fermentation, leaving unfermented grape sugar in their rieslings. The sugar offset the acidity, leaving delicate, low-alcohol, fruity wines of great freshness. The cold 2011 vintage in Australia created the conditions for comparable, though more alcoholic, styles here. Jeffrey Grosset demonstrates the style well. High, minerally acidity and tangy, lime-like varietal flavour sit well with a kiss of grape sugar and leave a really clean, refreshing, lingering finish. Will flourish with bottle age.

Class Act: The second release of riesling maestro Jeffrey Grosset’s single vineyard Off-Dry riesling from the Clare Valley is a step up from his impressive first vintage. It’s a bright, lively wine characterised by vivacious lemon blossom, freshly cut lime notes on the nose and palate, searing minerality and beautifully balanced acidity with the 16g/l of residual sugar adding interest rather than obvious sweetness. This is perfectly pitched and would be delightful with a Thai banquet.

Only Grosset could produce a wine of this style and elegance from the Clare Valley (as opposed to much cooler regions), with its vibrant lime and apple flavours, the acidity masking part, although by no means all, of the acidity. Will age wonderfully well.

The most approachable of the three Grosset rieslings, this is one to drink on hot summer days or with fresh Asian-flavoured salads. It smells of chalk, sweet basil, apple and lime. The palate’s elegant and tangy, offering crisp lime and apple flavour, hints of white peach, good intensity and impressive balance. Not too sweet at all.

The second release of riesling maestro Jeffrey Grosset’s single vineyard off-dry riesling from the Clare Valley is a step up again from his impressive first vintage. It’s a bright and lively wine that’s characterised by vivacious lemon blossom and freshly cut lime notes on both the nose and palate, searing minerality and beautifully balanced acidity with the 16g/l of residual sugar adding interest rather than obvious sweetness. One for lovers of German/Austrian wines, or those who simply find young Clare rieslings too confronting, this is perfectly pitched and would be delightful with a Thai banquet.
