‘ 2011 – A Wonderful Year’

Everyone at Grosset Wines is particularly excited about this release for many reasons. The following excerpts from an article in the Weekend Australian (Amos Aikman, p3 April 2, 2011) explain somewhat enthusiastically, what makes these wines special and also significant to those involved in their making:

The vintage is mixed but one winemaker’s hands-on efforts have seen him defy the odds.

It was the rolling European vineyards that inspired him, and the tender touch of human hands that carried Jeffrey Grosset’s vines through the toughest season in living memory to be his best vintage in 30 years. His is a rare achievement that will be the envy of most, particularly given many Australian grape growers have lost up to 50 per cent of the crops to disease and rot triggered by this year’s unusually wet season…

Grosset, a world-renowned winemaker, attributes much of his success to following the European tradition of hand-tending vines, honed over many generations of work in conditions often tougher than ours. “Europe had a very challenging year last year,” he says, citing a tour of wineries in France, Germany and Austria with his staff last September. “It was a lovely reminder, seeing how they were handling it. They were so positive… it really drove home that sooner or later a …(wet) year would come along and all the hard work would help get us through”

This year our disciplined approach to viticulture has been generously rewarded. Hand tending vineyards to achieve the full potential of each bunch of grapes may sound tedious; however it can ensure that no fruit is lost, that no fining of wine is necessary and the wines are in no way compromised by wet seasonal conditions. This was our experience in 2011.

What we are most excited about, is how they taste
